EVALUATION
Up to XL cycle
Annual Scientific Report: Students must submit a written scientific report at the end of each academic year to dottorato.m3es@unimore.it
Starting with XLI cycle
Supervisory Committee (SC)
During the first meeting, held in November, the M3ES Faculty assigns to each Student a Supervisor and appoints, upon the Supervisors proposal, a Supervisory Committee (SC). The SC include the students Supervisor and two expert members. The SC meets with the student, once a year, as detailed below, to discuss the development of PhD Project. SC assesses the progress and eventual critical isssue by filling after each meeting the FORM1_PROPOSAL (beginning of first year) and FORM2_AVANZAMENTO in the following years.
1st November: Start of the PhD program. By this date the Student has submit the Title and Abstract of the PhD Project to dottorato.m3es@unimore.it
115 February:
The student present orally the research project to the M3ES Faculty and the SC, which will complete FORM1_PROPOSAL (research project evaluation) and return it to the student.
By 30th September:
Students submit to the SC and the Educational Committee their annual report (free format, length: 5,0006,000 characters, spaces excluded) + CFU Excel file.
115 October:
Students present to the SC (on a date agreed among them) the progress made, discussing any critical issues (e.g., related to data collection/analysis, gaps to be addressed, etc.) and proposing a work plan for the following year.
SC members will assess the students progress, comment on the work carried out during the year, and provide suggestions to improve the PhD trajectory, completing FORM2_AVANZAMENTO (section for Year 1). At the end of the meeting, after sharing it with the student, the Supervisor sends the completed FORM2 to the Faculty (dottorato.m3es@unimore.it)
Around 15th October, a PhD Day will be held in which students present posters illustrating the scientific results of their ongoing research. The idea is not to present the entire project or list activities performed, but to focus on the scientific content, similar to a conference, to stimulate scientific discussion.
Afterward, the M3ES Faculty meets: to assign CFU according to the Educational Committees indications, and make decisions based on the SC report and the public poster presentation in order to admit students to the following year.
By 30th September:
Submission of a PhD Thesis draft to the SC or alternatively sending annual report/thesis outline and schedule an oral discussion with the SC (as agreed between student and SC) + CFU Excel file.
By 15th October:
Students meet with the SC, receive feedback on the Thesis, and discuss how to address any critical issues. SC members will complete a form evaluating the progress made during the third year and the thesis (FORM 2_AVANZAMENTO, evaluation of PhD student progress, section for Year 3), which must be submitted to the Faculty (dottorato.m3es@unimore.it).
Around 15th October a PhD Day will be held in which students present posters illustrating the scientific results of their ongoing research. The idea is not to present the entire project or list activities performed, but to focus on the scientific content, similar to a conference, to stimulate scientific discussion.
Afterward, the M3ES Faculty meets: to assign CFU according to the Educational Committees indications, and make decisions based on the SC report and the public poster presentation in order to decide on thesis submission to external reviewers (or a postponement of 612 months).
By 31th October:
Submission of the Thesis to external reviewers (reviewers must not have collaborated with the student and typically must not have joint publications with the Supervisor in the past 5 years). Exceptions are possible if justified in writing to the Coordinator.
By 30th November:
Reviewers send feedback to the student using the REVIEWER FORM.
110 December:
Final oral presentation to the M3ES Faculty and the SC. SC members are strongly encouraged to guide the discussion (estimated time per candidate: 1 hour total, 30 minutes presentation + 30 minutes questions).
The SC proposes a draft assessment to the Council, which, based on this and the external reviewers evaluations, decides on the admission to the final exam and formulates the final judgement.
